Well, unlike O-Rings as used by engineers, including the famous one that had one of NASA’s space shuttles explode due to manufacturing defects, when I say ring o ring I mean a tone represented best by the turning the face of the utterer from side to side. Almost as in nay saying and expressing some disenchantment or a measure of you trouble maker you, or you naughty you.
Hor, while indeed knotty as in tying the knot it is certainly the opposite of naughtiness, if not an indication of the end of naughtiness, and, at the same time nodding to the disbelief or almost disappointment for the situation created ny it. Tying the knot. Settling down. Getting married.
I am not sure when the custom started and probably if I Googled it I could find the origin of the habit but I believe that it is not THAT old. A few hundred years at most and the lot of the upper classes and royals only at first.
But why do so and what is the beauty or advantage, perhaps purpose in doing so. In having a wedding band, that is.
Regarding the first attribute mentioned above, “beauty”, we know already that beauty is, as the saying goes, in the eyes of the beholder. As to advantage it might depend on whom you ask and consult with. Many women would shyly admit that they see in it an old fashioned form of insurance policy. Insurance of fidelity. For the wearing husband makes it clear that he is not available. Not single. Any meddling with him entails philandering. On the border of social criminality and little acceptability. Some would take it to be so also on the part of the husband for he would not like to face a temptation hence his statement. I am wearing a wedding band. I am married. Don’t even think about it.
Here we enter in fact the domain of purpose as well if not functionality, as, some may say, a man wearing a wedding ring is also stating that he is the responsible type.
As an extension of it, the fanciness invested in the ring is also a show of wealth or originality and creativity.
Now, when it comes to the latter I would like to consider myself worthy of being counted with the original and creative ones, Not necessarily the wealthy, even though I know that some who opt for my choices for my engagement and wedding rings may do so in a grand manner. Mine has been on the rather modest side.
Modest and creative? Original? How is that?
In a sense, in today’s world of global, on line shopping it hasn’;t really been that much of a challenge.
I simply opted for black bands, or black rings, if you will. My black Titanium rings. I found to be an ethical decision too as it did not involve exploitative mining labor, a decision that extended also to my choice of diamond. A Canadian origin diamond that supported also a humanitarian philanthropy in Africa.
Hey, guess, based on the above ALONE , a, I a man or a woman…? Remember: these days women take part in choosing their engagement rings and wedding bands, and take iyt from there…
